Elnona Morton

Elnona Mae”Nonie” Morton, 90, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at Houston House.

She was born July 5, 1921, near Houston, daughter of Marion and Martha Longwell. She and Ervin Morton were married Feb. 28, 1943.

Both she and her husband gave their hearts and lives to the Lord early in their marriage. He pastored several churches throughout his life. Together, along with several brothers and sisters in Christ, they built what is now the Northside Baptist Church in Houston. She was the song leader there and he preached for many years. She preached when she was needed.

She worked as a beautician for many years. She and Ervin owned an upholstery shop that adjoined her beauty shop. They loved working together and spent long hours in their shop.

She loved to sew, quilt and work in her garden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Edgar Longwell, Mervin Longwell, Loman Longwell and James Longwell; and four sisters, Laverne Shoemaker, Lillian Irey, Evelyn Wren and Beatrice Randall.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Ervin Morton of Houston; a granddaughter; a grandson; and many other family members.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Northside Baptist Church with Wesley Wallace officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Evans Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Lawn.
