Representatives from the city and Major League Soccer’s local ownership group will host an event Thursday on the upcoming highway ramp closures and roadwork needed to make way for the team’s stadium project.
No formal presentation is scheduled, but the public will be able to ask questions and learn more about the project during an open house that runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the the Pear Tree Inn on Market Street.
The roughly $400 million project follows MLS’ award of the 28th team this summer to an ownership group led by the Taylor family of Clayton-based rental car giant Enterprise Holdings.
Much of the roadwork was already planned, partly to improve Jefferson Avenue and add ramps from westbound Highway 40 (Interstate 64) to 22nd Street and Jefferson in anticipation of the new National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency campus north of downtown.
Those new ramps will allow the closure and removal of highway ramps at Pine, Market and Chestnut streets and Ewing Avenue. That state land is then expected to be sold to the city and transferred to the ownership group for construction of the soccer facilities.
Also part of the improvements, Clark Avenue is to be reconnected east of 22nd Street, and 22nd extended north to Olive and south over Highway 40 to Scott Avenue.
