Food drive

Food collected Saturday as part of a food drive by the U.S. Postal Service.

Letter carriers in Texas County joined others across southwest Missouri in a collection of food Saturday to benefit food pantries.

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) said nearly 225,000 pounds of food was picked up on Saturday during the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

“This amount exceeded our expectations and proves once again that our community cares about each other,” said NALC chairman Tom Carter. “Thank you to everyone who donated food or time to help us help our community.”

The NALC, U.S. Postal Service, AFL-CIO Labor Engagement Partnership with United Way of the Ozarks, and local food pantries worked all day Saturday collecting and sorting food that residents left at their mailboxes. All donations go directly to local Ozarks Food Harvest food pantries, including Texas County Food Pantry.

This number is preliminary as more food will continue to trickle in this week. Last year’s event collected more than 255,000 pounds of food for local food pantries.
