KEEP IT REAL

In its third year, the Herald's Newspaper in Education program stresses the importance of reading to our children by providing newspapers each week for students in second through seventh grades at Houston Schools. A special page in each paper includes activities, stories and even contests for the children. The program is sponsored by The Bank of Houston.

Linda Buchanan is the coordinator of the project, which includes 13 elementary teachers, at the school. Jeff McNiell, Herald assistant managing editor, coordinates the activities for the classrooms, in the newspaper and the community.

Twist of Fate: The Miracle Colt and His Friends” is an eight-chapter story about a group of horses rescued from a truck crash on Interstate 44 outside of St. Louis.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

An emphasis is placed on negotiating through the paper and taking it home to encourage family discussion and interaction. Teachers are provided lesson plans that coincide with that week's newspaper or include special activities.
