Health department announces schedule for flu shots
The Texas County Health Department announced this week its seasonal flu shot clinics will begin Oct. 1.
Satellite clinics will be on the following dates:
— 9-11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Houston Senior Center.
— 9-11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at Licking Senior Center.
— 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Cabool Senior Center.
— 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Roby Community Center.
— 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Raymondville Community Center.
— 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Summersville Senior Center.
“Getting an annual seasonal flu shot is one of the best ways people can protect themselves against getting the flu. Shots are given on a walk in basis so appointments are not necessary,” says administrator Jackie Smith.
According to the CDC, everyone six months and older should get a flu shot as soon as vaccine is available. The 2010-’11 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and H1N1.
In the meantime, the health department encourages the public to protect itself with proven disease prevention methods like good hand washing, keeping a distance from people who are sick and making healthy choices that will boost their immune system. It is also vital that people who are sick stay home until at least 24 hours after their symptoms, including fever, are gone.
