Outdoor Recreation

Houston, located in the Ozarks in south-central Missouri, is the county-seat of Texas County. In addition to a progressive community, you'll find an abundance of beautiful sights and wildlife.

Nestled in the Ozarks, the area consistently ranks among the top counties in the annual deer and turkey kill in Missouri.

The Big Piney River, with access points throughout the county, is a popular stream for fishing and canoeing.


Other outdoor recreational spots:

  • Oakwood Golf Course is two miles east of Houston on Hwy. B. The 9-hole course has facilities that include a driving range, golf cart rentals and shed.
  • Montauk State Park, which features trout fishing and campgrounds, is in Dent County near Licking.
  • Golden Hill Trail Rides & Resort is a 5,100-acre ranch east of Houston that specializes in trail rides with scenic trails over hills through woods, meadows, ponds, springs, and creeks. Golden Hills offers a full service motel, mess hall and swimming pool.
  • Houston's bowling center, Houston Bowl, is a 10-lane modern facility which offers league and open bowling.
  • Phoenix Theater is home to an indoor theater that features Digital sound and a drive-in theater with stadium parking. It is located just east of Houston on Highway B.
  • Houston's Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of activities, including Cal Ripken Baseball, youth basketball and frisbee golf. There is also an Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts and two parks in town.

Emmett Kelly ParkA stream also runs through the park, which is named after the world-famous circus clown that called Houston home. Emmett Kelly Park is located conveniently along South U.S. 63 and features playground equipment, two pavilions with restrooms.

West Side Park is located near the Houston Municipal Swimming Pool on King Street. Houston's newest park - Rutherford Park - is on Westwood Drive west of the Houston Memorial Airport.


Recreation Activities

The Houston Park Board provides a variety of recreational activities through its parks and recreation department. Jim Root is the director, who oversees programs for youth and adults.
