Health Dept. Schedules Flu Vaccinations for October
Flu vaccinations will be available through the Texas County Health Department beginning in October.
Nurses will be at the Houston Senior Center on Oct. 1 and the following day at the Cabool Senior Center. Shots will also be available at the health department's Houston office on weekdays and Wednesdays at the Cabool office.
Carolyn Bell, R.N., said residents should also take these simple steps to help protect yourself and your family from influenza:
- Talk to your healthcare provider about receiving an influenza vaccination.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer.
- Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.
- Eat nutritious food.
- Get plenty of rest.
- If you aren't feeling well, stay home and drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
The flu is a viral illness spread when a person who has it coughs, sneezes or talks, sending contaminated respiratory droplets into the air where other people breathe them in. It can also be spread when a person touches a contaminated surface -- such as a doorknob or faucet -- then touches his own nose or mouth.
More than 95 million Americans get the flu each year. Most recover within two weeks, but approximately 36,000 people die every year of flu and flu complications.
