NEW: Fifth Annual Houston Fireworks Show on Friday
Patriotism - in huge doses - will be displayed Friday in Houston as the community celebrates Independence Day with one of the biggest showcases in southern Missouri. The fifth annual event is staged at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63.
The event, which includes a free fireworks display, is sponsored by the Houston Lions Club in cooperation with the Houston Optimist Club. It involves dozens of volunteers to stage the affair.
Two nationally known musical groups also will take to the stage. Highway 101 will present a concert at 6 to 7:30 p.m. Exile performs at 8 to 9:35 a.m. and returns again at 10:20 p.m. Tickets are required for the concert and are available at several locations in the area. A listing appears in this week's Herald.
The American flag will arrive on the grounds via parachutists. Freefall Express of Mount Vernon will offer jumps at the Houston Memorial Airport all day Friday.
A 30-minute firework show is set to music begins at 9:36 p.m. Persons in their vehicles can tune to 88.7 FM to listen to the songs.
Southern Fun Carnival's midway is open Thursday (tonight) and Friday at 5 p.m.
Food also is available. Gary Gasperson, a prize-winning cook who operates Backwoods Barbecue, will be on the grounds.
Organizers said profits are used to support the free fireworks show. Area merchants and individuals also contribute financially to make the event possible.
